Al Capone Does My Shirts Setting- There was a quite an unusual setting in Al Capone does my shirts. The story takes place in 1935, on Alcatraz island near the San Francisco Bay. This isn’t just any island; it is a prison island. I think the characters’ lives were very different from children today because living on a prison island limited them from communicating with there friends. Also they had to take a boat to school. Last but not least is that the kids that lived on Alcatraz live right next door to criminals like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. This is how I would describe the setting in the novel. Conflict- There was many conflicts through out the story. But the main conflict would be trying to get Nathalie to the Esther P. Marinoff. Because Nathalie has autism. The people involved would be Mrs. Flanagan, Mr. Flanagan, Moose, Carrie Kelly, and Al Capone. Mrs. Flanagan and the family moved to Alcatraz to be closer to Natalie’s school. A day after Nathalie was at the school they kicked her out and said she wasn’t ready for their school but they said Carrie Kelly would be able to help her get ready for the next time Nathalie signs up. Nathalie and everybody else helps her and she improves. She has stop throwing her tantrums. She signs up again and is rejected again. Everyone is devastated they really thought Nathalie improved. But Moose writes a letter to Al Capone asking if he can help. Soon Nathalie was accepted to the Esther P. Marinoff. Theme- There was quite a few themes in this novel. But the one that mostly showed through out the novel would be never give up. Nathalie was rejected twice from the Ester P. Marinoff, yet Mrs. Flanagan never quite trying because she wanted the best for her child. Mrs. Flanagan also tried helping Nathalie before even if her methods where strange to others.
