Prop 5 in the Polls When SAU voters walk into the poll booths this November, they will find a proposition 5 on their ballot. This proposition would allow the medicinal use of marijuana in the state of Arkansas. Currently, marijuana is a schedule I substance, which can be defined as having a high potential for abuse; a lacks medical utility, and being unsafe under medical supervision. Arkansas may be joining the 17 states in which this is already permitted: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, New Jersey, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. “Cannabis has many possible medical uses. In 2010 it was reported that 21.7 % of college students engaged in the use of marijuana. It is common for students ages 17 to 25 to feel stressed and resort to such illegal activity to relieve the overwhelming sense of pressure that often comes with college enrollment. (http://www.usatodayeducate.com) Senior Psychology and Criminal Justice major, Benjamin Atchison believes marijuana should be accessible for the medicinal value, recreational use, and experimental purposes it holds. Ben told The Bray, “I am an advocate for the various uses of marijuana. I believe this ancient remedy holds a lot of value and is not given the attention it deserves just like many other mind manifesting and cosmic substances. Our society needs to reevaluate the way we view our ‘most harmful’ drug class because it is absolutely warped and fallacious.” On a less consequential note, Professor Paul Babbitt believes that, “Unless a student has an illness that can be treated with medical marijuana, the passage of Proposition 5 is unlikely to have any effect on the SAU student body.” With these opinions and facts in mind, it is not necessarily important which way each person votes, but it is, however, ideal that students will be accurately informed before
