“Apostles of Disunion” In Apostles of Disunion, Charles Dew attempted to explain what led to the South’s decision to secede and ultimately cause a civil war. The one reoccurring theme he brings up as the major reason for the South’s secession was their widespread pro slavery attitude held at the time. Dew believed that if slavery had not existed, then the civil war would have never occurred. Throughout his writings he showed this Southern pro slavery attitude and used several examples to support this idea. Two of his best used examples were the the popular propaganda speeches made by slave owners in attempt to gain allegiance against the North and the South’s almost hatred of the Republican Party as a whole.
We are taught to blame slavery on the Southern states but we learned that the Northern states were just as responsible due to their lack of action, fear of the results due to abolishment, and most importantly their double standard on the stance of slavery. Professor Nash gives us and insightful view from the eyes of free blacks and their contribution in the fight for freedom and equality of African Americans. This book has given me an insight of our history of slavery that I was unaware of, people involved and events that took place. The struggle for equality that we have in our country now is evident that it stem from our past. Using these events we can understand ourselves and continue to build a stable and free America which our forefathers based their fight for liberty and freedom from England and strengthen the words written within our Constitution that establish freedom and equality for “ALL

We must understand that conflict is a given occurrence- in our communities, houses, work places, and throughout the world. Although, conflict is not always a bad thing, only as long as it is peaceful conflict. Destructive violence is evitable and it may possibly lead to imprisonment and eventually death. In a letter from Birmingham Jail 16 April, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote “An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.” By defying the unjust laws, one could make a greater impact onto their peers and surrounding community. Having the courage to stand up for what one’s conscious says is right, is a pure attribute worth striving for.
Mark Twain, the author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, made a good choice to include controversial words in the book to show racial injustice and should be taught in schools. The fight on racism is one of the most important parts about the book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Twain uses satire to poke fun at people and show them they are wrong; twisting their beliefs. Satire is used on anything from religion to racism to stereotypes. A great example from the book is when Pap goes on and on about how government lets blacks be free, “It was ‘lection day, and I was Just about to go and vote, myself, if I warn’t too drunk to get there; but when they told me there was state in this country where they’d let that nigger vote, I drawed out” (Twain 20).

Martin Luther King and president Abraham Lincoln had some similarities, which lead Martin Luther King to agree yet disagree with his council. The thought as to how both Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King both thought that it would be tragic if an anarchy would establish; was key. Violence and the way one would reason with society was also another important aspect when it came to the council and Martin Luther King’s views in regards to the whole segregation and civil rights ordeal. Civil disobedience was King’s main point in his fight for rights of all colored people in the United States, which would allow convincing Lincoln’s beliefs that were necessary to secure order and perpetuate our institutions. The establishment of anarchy made everyone in any kind of society to be frightened, if they aren’t use to having some sort of public government.
Challenge the authority While accepting the knowledge of authority, it is sometimes essential to question the ideas and decisions of those people in the positions of authority.
