As Odysseus is sailing away he yells his true name back to the island and Polyphemus prays to his father Poseidon to take a vengeance on Odysseus. Odysseus brought hardship upon himself when he yelled his name back to Polyphemus. Because Odysseus angered Poseidon and brought the gods wrath down upon himself and his men, he lost all of his remaining soldiers who were traveling home to Ithaka with him. This was a total of twelve ships full of men. Many of whom would have survived the trip if not for the choices that Odysseus made.
Grandpa Bobby was in a bar in a small fishing village in Colombia when he saw Paine's interview on the satellite TV. Hitching his way back to Florida, he tailed Noah and Abbey, suspecting what they were up to. Noah then tells the story of Operation Royal Flush, though Grandpa Bobby adds that the "gun" was just a flare. The Coast Guard shuts down the boat immediately. When Noah and Abbey go to thank Shelly, they find that Lice Peeking wasn't killed or kidnapped, just scared into running away.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest When the inmates went fishing and the boatman caught them, they all lied to him and said that they were doctors. This fishing trip was a big deal because it was the first “normal” day for the men who are locked away from society. I think that chief was able to pull of the routine after the party because he never said anything or responded in a noticeable way. Also, I think that all of the workers were focused McMurphy after he tried to choke out Nurse Ratchett. Billy’s problem is that he always fears his mother.
I watched helplessly as the king’s ship and crew, along with a dozen others, sailed off into the seemingly-everlasting sea. Slowly, I paced back to the castle, hearing all sorts of whisperings about Penelope and Odysseus from common goers. Already, agony had started to dwell inside my heart and mind, longing for Odysseus’ return. Arriving home, I heard the cry of an infant; our son, yet to be named. After a few days of pondering, I settled upon Telemachus, meaning ‘far-away
The world is dangerous because everything could happen around people. In the Open Boat, the four sailors are in a very dangerous situation in the sea which describe as “The horizon narrowed and widened, and dipped and rose, and at all times its edge was jagged with waves that seemed thrust up in points like rocks.” Crane’s words “jagged” to describe the waves shows how dangerous the waves are and also like “rocks”. In this situation, Crane’s tells the four people are going to die at anytime which reflects his view of this dangerous world. In the Blue Hotel, the Swede asked the gambler to have a drink with him but made the gambler mad
The start of story, the boys brought them to a plane crash in an island. Ralph had called out a meeting of figuring out to survive in the mean time and having a chief in control. Jack wanted to be chief saying “I ought to be chief…because I’m chapter chorister and head boy” (pg.14). That quote really indicates of how much he can take in control and be powerful as a chief. Jack was really negative about no one was going to find them in the island.
However, Outside in the darkness, lurked the monster Grendel. He gets angry, comes to mead hall, and starts killing people, but Hrothgar remained unharmed because he was protected by God. The coming of Beowulf was also similar with text by introducing Beowulf sailing across the sea to Hrothgar when help was needed to kill Grendel. Both in the text, and in the movie, Beowulf unlocked words deep from his hearts and talked about the Geats and his father, a famous soldier, Edgetho. Then that night Beowulf was awake, eager to meet with Grendel.
Even Odysseus’s hunger for kleos is a kind of temptation. He submits to it when he reveals his name to Polyphemus, bringing Poseidon’s wrath upon him and his men. In the case of the Sirens, the theme is revisited simply for its own interest. With their ears plugged, the crew members sail safely by the Sirens’ island, while Odysseus, longing to hear the Sirens’ sweet song, is saved from folly only by his foresighted command to his crew to keep him bound to the ship’s mast. 2.
This shows that when a once huge symbolism of power loses its significance, mayhem takes place. Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric march over to Castle Rock with the conch to try and get Piggy’s glasses back, and maybe restore some peace. Ralph calls an assembly with the conch and no one listens to him. Ralph and Jack get into a brawl and Jack nearly stabs Ralph with a spear. Jack orders his tribe to grab Samneric and tie them up.
But after Candide, Jacques, and Pangloss ship off to Lisbon, Portugal, their hope is shattered. A great storm kills their entire ship full of people besides Candide, Pangloss, and a crewman who happened to push Jacques overboard. After the two characters struggle their way onto the shore of Lisbon, an earthquake happens. This section of the story is probably at the lowest part of Candide’s optimistic level. The Lisbon people soon have an auto-da-fé, where many people are tortured and killed.
