The American Revolution was a result of the colonists unrest caused by their abhorrence towards their British Mother Country. For several centuries the colonies had been subject to rule by the English Crown and it’s Parliament. They no longer wanted to be controlled by a country an ocean away, and in turn sought independence. A huge factor in the start of the American Revolution was the French and Indian War that changed the age-old bond between the colonies and England. Decades of conflict followed, starting with the revolt as a result of the Stamp Act in 1765, leading to the eruption of war in 1775.
These laws, along with many others, upset the colonist to the breaking point in 1776 when they created the Declaration of Independance. The Declaration also states that "the king has obstructed the administration of justice by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers". This basically means that the kings has refused to let any colonists establish a court system. Many legislators and
Machiavelli would find Jefferson’s skepticism of immoral justification and Tyranny within the British government as antithetical towards his belief in successful power. He believes Jefferson’s opposition defies the principles of control, which is required to lead a successful power in his opinion. Here it is quoted, “The histoty of the present king of Great Britian is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations”(532) ;Thomas Jefferson states the government under the British crown is made up of flaws within the system and repeated abusement towards the people; he believes King George has stripped freedom and justice from the people, making him more than a mischievous king, but an absolute tyrant. In addition to his abusement in power, he has not only taken freedom from the people, but also their peace at mind; a ruler of this kind who breaks the laws of his own government and refuses to take any concern in protecting the physical and psychological security of his own people is unfit to be a ruler, according to Jefferson. Machiavelli believes security and freedom are unnecessary when ruling; if you give the people too much freedom, they will take advantage of it and they will possess the
After the war, Great Britain was in a large enough debt that it was able to destroy the English government. This affected political and economic relations between the colonies and Great Britain. The British had ideals that set them apart from the English colonies. Despite the two of them working together against the French opposition, the ways the British treated and behaved around the colonists in British North America convinced them that they would be put entirely under the rule of the English crown and one day become enslaved. The British forgot about the role that the American troops had in the war.
4 Pg. 1) It is clear the writers of the constitution used views on natural law when they put in, “governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” The makers of the constitution wrote this because they believed the people of the colonies were not being treated fairly by British government and they were not happy. They believed this gave the citizens of the colony every right to overthrow the government based on natural law when they said, “it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government,
The colonists believed that they should have separate laws from Britain because they are not directly represented in parliament. When the colonists continued to disobey the new laws, Britain enforced a harsher set of laws, known as the intolerable acts, to show the colonies that Britain was angry for the Boston Tea Party. This further angered the colonists and caused them to rethink the idea of a rebellion. The colonies as well violated the rights they were fighting for, by
Many, many things caused the revolution. From the economic problems, to the discontent with autocratic rule. Also, the colonies were not allowed their own economy to flourish, not letting the colonials print legal tender money which also in turn, since any monies printed was not considered by the King, it made it much harder to pay royal taxes. After the Boston Tea Party, came the Coercive Acts, or the Intolerable Acts on Boston, which really upset them and made them want to take even more action, rather than just using effigies (dolls made to look like the redcoats and used to scare the redcoat's and boycotting. Between the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 and the French and Indian War the colonies have been isolated by the mother country due to the policy of salutary neglect in which the king argued that colonies should take care of their own affairs, as the British were busy fighting foreign wars.
Since the colonies were a part of the British empire they believed it was necessary for them to have direct representation in parliament. They believed these implementations were unjust and that parliament should have continued the period of salutary neglect. When parliament further limited the colonists with the untolerable acts, the colonists rebelled against their fellow englishmen and the british government. From another
The Glorious Revolution was to overthrow King James II of England by a union of the English Parliamentarians and with William of Orange in the Netherlands. The Glorious Revolution recreates the monarchy England had lost in the reign of Oliver Cromwell but limits its power under the Constitutional Monarchy. The House of Commons became equal to and gaining more power than the House of Lords. After much intolerance over religion, the Parliament issues with the long succession of kings, and the people’s wishes being denied more often than not, I believe that England should be ruled as a democracy where people are able to elect leaders, try to keep a stable throne and ensure reforms that will help the people. My past experiences and views of how a government should be and its ruler has helped me come to this decision.
Major differences in political culture included the lack of a strong aristocratic class in America, the growing diversity and factional conflicts in different regions of the colonies, and the American view that members of their representative assemblies had the right to make changes in local constitutions. Americans had a long record of disobeying and rejecting acts of parliament. They thought the British discarded this common heritage of liberty that kept the empire together and felt there was a conspiracy to destroy it on both sides of the coin. Before the seven years war, the colonists had set up their own political arena though they were similar to England. When the war was over that is when the issue of taxation without representation started.
