Emily Corwin Book Evaluation The book ‘Lorna Doone-a Romance of Exmoor’ takes place around the 17th century in Exmoor in Devon and Somerset in South-West England. This story is told by John Ridd, a yeoman of Oare parish, Somerset, looking back on his life as an old man. When the story begins John Ridd, the son of a farmer with a prosperous farm in Exmoor, is at school in Tiverton. He is in school until November 29, 1673 on his twelfth birthday, when a messenger tells him he must return home. On their way to his home they stop at an inn, where they meet a wealthy, noble lady with her two children, a daughter and a son. They then come close to the Doones of Bagworthy’s lair, and must hide from a party of about thirty Doones pass with goods and the girl from the inn. The Doones of Bagworthy had once been a family of aristocrats but they became robbers and murderers after they lost their land due to a fight with their cousin and had caused them to become outlaws after insulting King Charles I. The Doones’ captain is Sir Ensor Doone along with his advisor Counsellor Doone. Upon arriving home to his farm John discovered that his father has been murdered by a member of the Doone clan, who he later finds out was Carver Doone. Fighting his desire to avenge his father, he grows up and becomes a respectable farmer, like his father, and cares for his mother and his two sisters, Annie and Lizzie. On Valentine’s Day after John’s fourteenth birthday, he tries to catch loach for his sickly mother, but fails at his usual route. He then ventures toward Bagworthy, which lead into Doone Valley, and finds what he is looking for. He tries to climb the waterfall but collapses from exhaustion, later waking in Glen Doone with a girl named Lorna Doone, who helps him to safely escape.
