Gun Control in the United States English 102 “The fact that we can’t prevent every act of violence doesn’t mean we can’t gradually decrease the violence.” These are the words from President Obama as he speaks on all the tragedies that have taken place in the U.S such as; the mass shooting that killed twenty-six people in Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the mentally ill soldier from Fort Hood, Texas that killed himself after killing three and wounding sixteen. It is definitely time for people to come to an agreement on what need to be done about all this violence. States that have strict gun laws still have high crime rates. “To be sound mind and spent a considerable amount of time and money to obtain a conceal-carry permit is not the person you have to worry about shooting up the place. It’s the idiot or psychotic criminal who has no regard for the law or your rights or safety who is the person you should worry about” (Springfield 2010). Criminals have a few ways to purchase a gun without passing a background check and that is buying it at a gun show, online, or stealing it. If there were stricter gun laws in place how are people suppose to feel safe in their homes. Criminals are called criminals for a reason they do not live their life with respect to laws, they always find a loop hole to get what they want. “Gun free zones do little to protect law-abiding citizens, law abiding citizens do not carry guns in these areas, but criminals do; this will only make soft targets for criminals and increase the chance of violent crimes” (2010). Everyone has a constitutional right to bear arms, and legislation will only be taking away the rights of people to protect themselves.
