Effects of Stress Stress is a feeling of mental or physical strain or suspense. It can affect an individual in many ways and each individual has their own way of coping with stress. Sometimes stress can be good, but for high school students it is never a positive aspect to have in life. Stress on high school students can affect their social and academic life and can also affect a student’s health. Stress can become a huge obstacle for students in high school. It can ultimately affect a student’s social life in many ways. Students overwhelmed with stress will sometimes turn to heavy drinking in order to relieve stress. A student’s ability to withstand the pressure from their peers to engage in certain bad activities such as using drugs is lowered due to stress. Some students may also have a tough time with friendships because of frustration and anxiety from stress. Although stress can affect a student’s social life, the overall impact on their academic performance is much greater. When a student suffers from excessive amounts of stress it can greatly affect their academic life. Stress can affect the student’s ability to learn and perform well and possibly drop their grades and GPA’s. Many high school students do not graduate because they drop out early, mainly because they could not cope with the stress they were experiencing in high school. Even though stress can hurt a person’s academic performance, it can also be hazardous to their health. With high school students, fitting in is a huge priority and it sometimes results in weight issues. Students continuously stress themselves about trying to look decent and obtaining the perfect weight. The stress from trying to look good has many students suffering from horrible health problems.
