Applied Research Technologies, Inc. Clinton Saylor Bus 518- Project Management Leadership Dr. Johnnie E. Drake, Jr. Strayer University April 28, 2013 Abstract Peter Vyas is general manager working on a project to bring water filtration systems to homes and businesses in the United States. His boss is Cynthia Jackson, vice president of the Filtration Unit. They are in a quandary as they must decide whether or not to move forward on $2 million of additional funding that has been requested on a product that has been a drain on the company up to this point. Both Vyas’ and Jackson’s leadership styles will be analyzed as well as my leadership style, and I will share how I would let the team know my decision about the additional funding. Lastly, I will describe a boss who shows the same characteristics as Cynthia Jackson and how that leadership style fits the project. Leadership Style of Peter Vyas Peter Vyas is a participative leader. He is focused on supporting his team and their abilities to complete tasks set out for them. When using participative leadership “there is less emphasis on the task, but still high supportive behavior.” (Lewis, 2003, p. 82) He really allowed his team to be innovative, which is in line with the company’s culture. He has established what he wants his team to do but how they get to that point he has entrusted to them. Vyas is as concerned with the emotional status of his team as he is the productivity they produce. By allowing his team to have freedom and confidence to do their tasks Vyas has given them the license to become more creative. This creates a positive work atmosphere that people enjoyed working in. As a leader though, he still has retained the right to make final say about a project and its final outcome.
