Stereotypes: Why I Need To Speak Spanish

Stereotypical Minds Society says that, being Mexican means that I need to know Spanish. Is this correct for society to assume that I should know Spanish? I believe that because my skin is brown, people automatically assume that I speak Spanish. Normally, I can brush something like this off but it’s been done to me my whole life. When I am around other Mexican Americans, the first thing that I get asked is, do you speak Spanish? Then, I tell them no and it is like I have the black plague. I have noticed that since I do not speak Spanish that I am excluded. I know this sounds crazy but it is the sad truth. This kind of treatment makes me feel powerless. I had no control over my parents teaching me Spanish but I suffer the consequences. I have had people question me and expect an explanation. It angers me that society feels like I need to explain why I do not speak another language. Then at times, I feel ashamed. The stereotype that is cast upon me is unreal. I do not understand how people can judge me based on the fact that I do not speak Spanish. So, in a way I am very defensive about it. My whole life I have been treated this way; it is bound to have some negative affect on me.…show more content…
So, you do not know another language, there are worst things in life. According to an article Catholic Online (2013), “The Mexican immigrant suffers a stereotype in American culture. Mexican immigrants tend to be poor, they tend to be laborers, they tend to be resourceful, religious, and share strong family values. They enjoy lavish celebrations filled with music and color. And of course, they speak Spanish. Also, we'd be wrong to believe this.” I have been stereotyped my whole life and to this, continue to be.
