Essay ”Stench of Kerosene” In ”Stench of Kerosene” the narrative style is all knowing, it can see and describe everything from how someone feels to their thoughts and to what happens seen from every angle. In this story it is used in a way that makes us feel sympathy for the main character Manak, after his first wife Guleri kills herself. It does this by describing how he changes and how people look at him which leaves a strong image on how it must feel to be told that your loved one committed suicide because of you. After all the reason why Guleri committed suicide was that Manak could not disobey his mother and married another woman while Guleri was away. This display just how much power ones mother have over your life in India that if she says you will marry someone you do it even when you are already married and love you wife. Though the stat an middle of the story, before Guleri leaves for the fair we can feel that something is of because Manak does not what Guleri to leave but cannot really tell her why. This is probably because he knows what her mother has in store as soon as Guleri leaves. It is also obvious that Manak does indeed not what to marry any other woman even though Guleri is incapable of bearing a child, this also being the reason why Manak’s mother what him to re-marry so that she can have a grandchild. Manak’s mother is completely oblivious to Manak feelings and uses him almost like a tool for her own end with no regard to Manak’s opinion and feelings. Around the middle of the story Guleri leaves for the fair and Manak follow her quite a way because he does not what to be alone with his mother and does not what to marry this other woman, he plays her flute once and then gives it to Guleri as he gets off and walks back home, this may be meant like a goodbye present.
