Steeple chasing is not a cruel sport in fact it is beneficial for the horse’s wellbeing. Over the last several years uneducated individuals have been quick to label the sport of steeple chasing as cruel. However, they fail to recognise that horses are given a second chance at life with steeple chasing. If horses did not partake in steeple chasing, they would not be able to live a fulfilling life and get treated poorly. When horses suffer significant injuries in steeple chasing they are euthanized swiftly, which further demonstrates it is not a cruel sport. Those who say the sport is cruel stubbornly argue that the sport is unkind because a horse may be in pain for three minutes before a professional vet euthinises the injured horse. The short term suffering a horse perhaps endures during a controlled event is traumatic but the pain suffered is short lived. Without the sport the horse would suffer dearly. While this may seem somewhat cruel that a horse is euthinised within only three minutes, can be other horses injured and unsupervised for a week in a paddock. According to Wise Geek. (2011). “its better for the horse because they don’t suffer long time discomfort”. During this time it can sustain an injury such as a broken leg where the horse will drag a snapped leg in real distress for a week before getting medical help, often forcing its carer to shoot it. During this period of time the horse can get infection, bleed to death or die of stress which is more traumatic then being euthinised. Who would like having a snapped leg for a week? During a race the pain is short lived but in the paddock a horse can be in distress for day’s even weeks without any medical attention. Steeple chasing has considerable benefits. Without the sport horses that don’t make ‘the cut’ are killed or live in a life in a paddock, where they are treated poorly. Steeple chasing is not cruel because when the hot suffers and injury it is put out of misery swiftly by a professional vet.
