E1- Describe the development of children in a selected age range and in 2 areas of development. Physical Development: Physical development is important for 3 reasons Allows new learning to take place Allows further development-build on skills already perfected Enhances confidence/self esteem 0-6 months Babies learn how to control their muscles and movements. Baby’s development of fine motor skills can be watches hands and plays with fingers, clasps and unclasps hands and can hold a rattle for a moment. Its development of gross motor skills are, lifts head and chest up and waves arms and brings hands together over body. By one month, a baby can turns its head from side to side when lying on the back or belly, and can move its hands and arms.
Development is the process of learning new skills and abilities. Development changes are a result of both environmental and genetic factors. Genetic factors are responsible for growth whilst the environmental factors are responsible for emotional development. The development of a child is sub categorised into difference key stages that take place during the first eight years of their life: Intellectual Physical Social and Emotional Language and Communication Intellectual 0-2 years: From birth – 3 months infants have the ability to focus on objects that are a few inches away from them. From 3-6 months they begin to develop their co-ordination and enjoy the stimulation of bright and shiny objects.
A baby will lie on his back and have the ability to turn his head to the mother’s breast. From there a baby learns to kick legs, find his hands and in time, start to control his head. Physical movement progresses between six to eighteen months from rolling over, to shuffling along, crawling, standing and walking unaided. By two he should be fully mobile and able to throw or kick a ball. Between eighteen months to four years bladder control develops and from three to five years children demonstrate their ability to run and negotiate stairs with relative ease.
They can also hop on one foot, walk up and down stairs alone and is able to hold a fork with 3 fingers instead of a fist. By 5 years old, the child should be able to draw shapes and patterns and be able to ride a bike alone. By 6 years old they should be able to tie their own shoe laces and play an instrument such as a recorder. 10-18 Around this stage of physical development, girls and boys start puberty. Girl’s ovaries produce oestrogen, so they can now be able to have children and their periods start.
Also during this period, the child will make great strides in language and social skills (Lockman, 2009, p.6). The text suggests that there are three major periods of a baby’s development through the first two years of life (Brooks, 2010, p. 211). During the development of self-period, infants’ visual, sensory and motor responses emerge and so it is important for new parents to ensure their baby is stimulated with things such as mobiles or even just playing with their newborn. Babies, even newborn babies, like being around people and engaging with people (Brooks, 2010, p. 215). Allowing for the newborn to have many interactions with both their parents and other newborns will start the development of their social and emotional skills.
From birth through to adulthood children continually grow, develop, and learn. A child’s development can be measured through social, emotional, intellectual, physical and language developmental milestones. In general, child development progresses from head to toe. Beginning at the top of the body and gradually moving downwards from inner to outer. Firstly gaining control of muscles close to the head and then moving outwards so the large muscles in the shoulders and upper arms/thighs are first and the extremities last from simple to complex; children progress from simple words to complex sentences from general to specific; emotional responses involve the whole body in young babies but may involve only the face in an older child It is important to understand how children develop physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually and to know that all areas of development
They may even be confident enough to jump from low heights, and be able to ride a tricycle. By four years old a child should be able to catch, throw and kick balls. They should be confident with balance and able to walk in a straight line. By a child’s fifth birthday physical activities, such as skipping,
In a babies second year a babies physical development will continue and develop quickly. They will start to develop fine motor skills such as being able to hold small objects, dressing and undressing and will also enjoy climbing. Most babies at this stage will be walking. In their third year when they are toddlers they will be running and walking with more confidence, enjoy looking at books and feeding themselves. Communication and Intellectual development starts from the moment a baby is born.
CYP 3.1 2.3 Explain how the theories of development frameworks to support development influence current practice Researched from How Children Learn by Linda Pound Jean Piaget - Cognitive Piaget was interested in intellectual development. He identified 4 stages of development from birth through to adulthood. These are Sensorimotor Piaget called the first 2 years of a child's life the sensorimotor stage. This is when babies/toddlers knowledge and understanding are chiefly drawn from physical action and their sight, sound, taste, touch and smell (senses). Preoperational This is the stage from the age of 2 year up to the age of around 6 or 7 years old.
Within the early months a child will make eye contact and be able to turn their head to the smell of their mothers breasts, they will listen to voices, develop co-ordination, they enjoy colourful and shiny objects they should also be able to play simple games such as peek-a-boo. By age two a child will be amusing themselves with “pretend” play and favourite toys they have, by age three their concentration grows and they are able to control pencils and paintbrushes, at age four their memory will develop quickly, and should be able to build things with
