Juan Ruperez OST2053 April 4, 2010 Four Stages of a Job Opening When searching for a job, it’s usually the one that does not follow the traditional job searching process is the one to get the job. Job opportunities come about way before the job is even announced at times. Job openings can be broken down into four different stages. It is very important that the candidate try to get the job within the first three stages. When thinking of a job opening it is great to have an excellent resume, but the ability to speak to people and approach them without knowing them is an even better tool to obtain a job. The first stage of a job opening is probably the most important. It is known that employers typically like to hire someone that they already know or someone has referred them. Even though there may not be an opening at the time, it is always smart to present yourself to an employer in a professional, yet friendly matter and discuss the possibility of future job openings. This way you are already ahead of the game, opposed to someone who applies for a job because they saw an ad in the newspaper. Not only that, but you are no longer a stranger to the employer. They are already familiar with your skills and know the level of commitment from your part. The second stage is one in which your networking skills may help. Introduce yourself with people who work at the company. Usually coworkers or people who are in the organization usually can anticipate a future job opening before it is available. Working in the firm, they know how business is going, who’s doing well and whose not, or even whether or not they are creating a new position within the company.
