Sports Fans Characteristics: Fanatical, Recreational and Fair-Weather Sports represent competition, ranging from street games to international games, such as the Olympics. The popularity and financial success of sports players and teams is dependent on fans. Fans are emotionally connected to teams and individuals. They support sports through participating in sports events as spectators, and following the events through other media. They purchase event tickets and merchandise, and keep the competitive environment charged with their enthusiasm. Winning individuals and teams often attribute their success to the energy and passion of their fans. There are many types of fans who support sports competitions, including fanatical fans, recreational fans and fair-weather fans. Each fan plays a role in the sports environment. Sports marketers are constantly working to identify the interests of these fans and engage them. The ideal fan for a sports marketer may be the fanatical devoted fan. However, innovative strategies still need to be developed to keep them engaged. The following essay will discuss three types of fan who contribute to the success of a sports event. The most passionate of fans are the fanatical fans. According to Feldman, they are the ones who are diehard and will put their favourite team before almost all other priorities (Feldman, Blake, p 1). They are often season ticket holders and watch every sporting event in which their favourite team or player is participating. These fans are often very knowledgeable about a player’s or team’s statistics and will support a favourite team or player regardless of their performance. They typically have a collection of their favourite team’s or player’s merchandise and wear their team colours, even in times of defeat.
