Sports Experience Throughout history sports for women and men have differed greatly. In 1972 legislation passed Title 9, which would change women’s sport experiences forever. I chose to interview 2 individuals that were in high school prior to the 1972 act. Their sport experiences were very different from mine and from anyone after 1972. The 2 individuals that I chose to interview were my grandmother and grandfather. These are my findings of their sports experience. The first person that I interviewed was my grandmother. She attended high school from 1952 to 1956 at El Monte High School in the state of California. She felt that there were several different activities that were available to her, mostly school sponsored. There were limited amount of activities that were competitive. Even though there were opportunities available to her, she chose not to participate in any of those activities. In her community, there were more recreational activities available than competitive sports for women. She was not encouraged by her parents to play sports. She instead took care of the household, starting at age 10. The community didn’t support the girls’ sports as much as the boys’. The media did not attend girls’ events, but did attend boys’ events. She did not feel she was cheated in her sports experience because she had no desire to play sports. She felt it was not lady-like to participate in sporting events. The next person that I interviewed was my grandfather. He attended high school from 1947 to 1951 at Monte Bello High School in the state of California. The activities that were available to participate in for boys were mainly school sponsored and highly competitive. My grandfather participated in football, baseball, and basketball. The sports were very competitive, he recalls traveling to play other high schools each week and a championship
