Sports as a Way of Life What is sports? The word sport comes from "disport" which means to amuse or to divert one's self. It includes play, amusement, entertainment and recreation. Sports covers any physical activity that requires skill and effort. Normally, there are a few rules to follow. There are many different types of sports but they can basically be grouped into individual and team sports. There are even different versions of the same sport. What makes sports different is that it is a distraction from everyday problems. After a bad day at work or a troubling day at school, just go home and watch a game on television. For three hours or so, you do not have to worry about mounting bills, endless examinations or meeting datelines. This is what makes sports so unique. Sports are real reality shows. It has heart-stopping moments, compelling drama and can keep us guessing what's going to happen next. To top it all off, it is happening for real. The players are not play-acting or following a script, they are fighting tooth and nail for victory and this is what makes sports so appealing. Whether the winners leap in joy or the defeated team displays its anguish, viewers can share the same moment and experience the same emotions. Probably boring and lifeless. The main physical function of sports is to provide a healthy and enjoyable means of keeping fit, for both adults and children. "A sound mind in a sound body" is a motto known to many. Sports refresh the body, calm emotions, enlighten the mind and develop moral character. A student who exercises is always fresh and vigorous, seldom gets sick and tired besides possessing a good disposition. The health which he acquires will help him to work harder and become more successful.
