James speaks against these in his teaching. He exhorts them to remain true to the teachings and practices of the faith. James’ teachings are often compared to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which would be logical due to him being brought up in the same environment as Jesus. The book of James is a protest against hypocrisy. Some have criticized James in that they thought he was teaching that salvation was by works alone, but in reality he is complementing Paul’s teaching of salvation by faith.
That's why I preach my way through entire books of the Bible, dealing carefully with each verse and phrase--even though that occasionally means spending time in passages that don't readily lend themselves to anecdotal or motivational messages. I am grateful to the Lord for the way He has used this exposi- tory approach in our church and in the lives of our radio listeners. But now and then someone tells me frankly that my preaching needs to be less doctrinal and more practical. Practical application is vital. I don't want to minimize its importance.
The Holy Spirit is important in causing the change and the Word of God is the source of helping the client to become Christ -like. According to Adams (1986), this change must be toward God and must be “from the heart outward” (p. 7). If not, then the change is just superficial and it will eventually lead the client further astray. The very backbone of his counseling is 2 Timothy 3:16, which states: ," But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work"(NIV, 2010).

Backus and Chapian (2000) discuss how the fruit of a person stems from what they believe, so if a person believes an error the actions and behavior will be based off what he believe. According to Backus misbelief is the self-talk, the stinking thinking that people have. The thoughts that people tend to dwell on and relive constantly in their mind is misbelief the concept of self-talk. Dr. Adams approach to counseling is founded on the word “of God”. Adams references scripture throughout the process of his theory but he specifically references 2 Timothy 3:14-17 pertaining to change.
Brooks’ easy to read and understand discussion of the importance of naming good news in the sermon is immensely helpful. According to Brooks, good news preaching is intentional. This intentionality is through the interpretative reading of the text and moves through homiletical exegesis. In a practical manner, Brooks provides the method that will enable preachers to offer the gospel (good news) in every sermon. I found the practical sections of this book to be extremely helpful.
Moreover, Whitney challenges us to consider that godliness is the objective of the disciplines. Therefore, we are to approach them with gladness and not toil. The disciplines discussed in Whitney’s book are: Bible intake (one and two), prayer, worship, evangelism, serving, stewardship, fasting, silence and solitude, journaling, and learning. Dr. Anderson displays a strong foundation of counseling through truth and having a relationship with Christ. Other web based articles were used to support the theory of Anderson’s book. Although the web based articles other different avenues of Christian counseling all of the sources used share a common root, how to show others how to overcome their problems to become healthy well adjusted individuals by using biblical concepts. Christian Counseling to the Spiritually Oppressed Discipleship is receiving instruction from a religious leader and being a follower who has learned to believe in the truth of the doctrine of his teacher. The first priority of a Christian leader is a close personal relationship with God. Leaders must protect their own spiritual walk with God, which is the foundation of their leadership (Acts 4:1-3).
