Joe Buchmann ASL II Melissa Pilant February 23rd, 2015 “Sound of Fury” I don’t have much experience with the Deaf culture. I have a friend I met online who is deaf but he was able to write so I never fully got into the deaf world. Reason why I mention this is it is hard for me to relate to the Deaf community such as I can relate more to the hearing parents in the film. However, I don’t agree with everything that was said from both parties. I can understand what Mari and her husband are saying about wanting the cochlear for their son Peter but I also understand where Nita and her husband were coming from. I respect that Nita and Peter for not choosing to get the cochlear implant for their daughter and I also respect Mari and her husband…show more content…
One thing throughout the movie that irritated me was Peter’s parents trying to pressure Nita & Peter into trying to get the Heather the cochlear implant. She should have respected their decision. They did do research and met with families and came to the conclusion that it was not the best interest for them or for their daughter and the grandparents should have respected that decision. I feel like there is no right or wrong in these kind of situations. Pardon my language but it’s one of those damned if you and damned if you don’t situations. I completely understand where Mari was coming from about wanting more options for her son to be able to hear and I also agree with Nita and Peter about they are not limited by not being able to hear. One thing I have learned from taking ASL courses is the deaf do not see deafness as a handicap and I have to agree. The deaf are able to function and able to do everything that the hearing able to do. Maybe not in the same way but that has never stopped the deaf and they see deafness as normal as they should. I really didn’t like how the grandmother went about things as I felt that she was very closed minded and only wanted things her way and I
