NMDS121 Sociology of Food and Nutrition Essay 1 Rachael Stephens Student number: 245918 Date: 06/09/2015 Word Count: 1627 Introduction: There are many cultural and historical influences that have had an impact on European diet and food traditions. Sicilian and Bavarian diets have distinctive comparative diets that have been influenced by culture, historical background, geographical location and religion. Sicily is an island located in the south of Italy (see figure 1). Sicily is densely populated with 5 million people. The climate is mostly warm and the island is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Like the rest of Italy, Sicilians predominately follow a Mediterranean diet. ('Italy', 2015, Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, p. 1.) Munich is located in South Germany and is in close proximity to Italy. See figure 2. It has a population of around 1.3 million. The climate is true to season with it being very warm in summer and cold in winter. (About Munich, 2002) Sicilian Food: The effortless cooking style of Sicilians and simple quality ingredients, make southern Italian food, one of the most popular cuisines in world. They are best known for their pizza and pasta. (Helstosky, C 2009, pg 2) The Sicilian Mediterranean diet consists of whole grains, vegetables and fruit. The oil of choice is always olive for cooking. Fish is preferred over meat as Sicily is close to the sea and many towns are fishing villages (Rebora, G, 2001 pg28). Fish is normally boiled or fried and seasoned with olive oil, lemon and herbs or marinated in sweet sour mixture. (Helstosky, C 2009, pg 103) The Mediterranean diet doesn’t include much red meat or any junk, frozen or processed foods. (Helstosky, C 2009, pg 2) The base of many Sicilian dishes is the mixture of tomato, onion, garlic, carrot, celery and olive oil. This is the base for many soups, stews and
