Some of those reasons being the crime rates, the costs of what could happen, and injuries. Firearm injuries have killed more than 28,000 Americans each year since 1972 (Ruben). In 2007, thirty-one thousand two hundred twenty four Americans died due to homicides, suicides, and accidental shootings. Accidental shootings happen quite often. In 2007, around seventy thousand Americans were hospitalized due to accidental shootings.
A study conducted in 2004 showed that 3,100 people die each year and 72, 000 are hospitalized due to alcohol. Young Australians are becoming part of this statistic. Another study stated that one teen age 14-19 years dies every week due alcohol consumption. Australia also has one of the highest rates of alcohol disorders in the world. According to the national survey of health and wellbeing, 22% of people who over consume alcohol will develop alcohol use disorders (National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre, 2010).
Lots of pre- and early adolescent children with bipolar disorder are more severely ill than adults with the disease. Around 25% of children with bipolar disorder are seriously suicidal and have a much higher risk for mixed mania, multiple and continuous cycles, and a long duration of illness without a gap in between (Suicide Rate, 2007). According to the National Mental Association statistics 30 to 70% of suicide victims have suffered from some kind of depression. “More than 1,700 college students in the U.S. are killed each year—about 4.65 a day—as a result of alcohol-related injuries” (The Marin Institute). With a number as high as this, lowering the drinking age would only increase this ongoing problem of underage drinking. It has even been proven by the Marin Institute to be the leading cause of death among teenagers. Many adults feel as if the 18 to 21 age groups cannot handle drinking responsibly, then they should not be permitted to use it. TIME TO BLOCK GUN VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN If October is like every other month, 46 women in the United States will be murdered with a gun by an intimate partner. Public attention was gripped by the most recent mass shooting, at the Navy Yard in Washington, but during Domestic Violence Awareness month, we need to focus on the fact that women face a heightened risk of gun violence. Women are more than three-and-a-half times as likely to be killed by an intimate partner as men. A gun in a household with a history of domestic violence increases by 20 times the risk that a woman will be killed there, compared to households without guns. Similarly, more than 75 percent of stalking victims are women — and stalkers use weapons to harm or threaten their victims in 1 out of 5 cases.
