Social Media and its Impact in Social Skills Today, 94% of adolescents use some kind of social media, one of the most popular social media websites of today is Facebook and the average adolescent has around 300 friends in it (Madden et al., 2013). The truth is, this are not friends, many of these people are just acquaintances and sometimes they do not even know them; however, they play an important role in the social life of these individuals. One the issues that social media represents is that it can create a distorted reality. It has been discussed that social networking gives individual the sense that they have an audience following their lives (Brown, 2013). Due to this idea, people have an unrealistic perception of how “likable” they are. Social media is a mirage, a creation of a society that has now broken communication lines and broken social bond. When I was growing up I had no choice but to socialize with classmates and friends; therefore, I had to develop social skills because it was part of my developmental process. The entertainment was limited, and other individuals were ‘needed’. Unfortunately as technology has evolved, so has the interest in the human contact, if a person has its audience right in front of the computer, there is no need to have real friends; however, this can create a social issue. What happens when individuals, especially children and adolescents stop socializing face to face and constantly chase the thrill of the virtual world? Furthermore, what happens when children and adolescents who have poor social skills uses social media to fulfill social needs? There are strong beliefs that social interaction an important place in human development and emphasizes the importance of it to be socially healthy individuals.
