Humans are supposed to be social. The more time students spend on social sites, the less time they spend socializing in person. Because of the lack of body signals and other non-verbal cues, like tone and inflection, social networking sites are not an adequate replacement for face to face communication. “Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just has hard.’’ (Anne Spencer) Students who spend a great deal of time on social networking sites are less able to effectively communicate in person. Social networks reduce or eliminate face to face socialization.
Cyber bullying is worse than normal bullying because it occurs on the internet, which is a much larger scale. The internet has become very common in today's society. It has played a major role in the social lives of many children. They are able to shop, communicate, and make good friends just by using the internet. People are also able to distribute information to a lot of people in very little time.
People spend too much time and energy trying to find these relationships. There seems to be a less of a connection with people online. Jung’s article talks of Cornell University's Steven Strogatz who says “ By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections...will weaken” (par.2). Recent discoveries reveal that people aren’t who they really are online; leading people to “date” the unknown. People make fake accounts and use them to meet other people.
The internet today can even allow you to be in a virtual world and in that world you can be anywhere at any given place and time. The internet has evolved into a fast convenience in today’s society, so much so that you can now date online. Dr. Helene M. Lawson and Dr. Kira Leck researched the effects on internet dating in today’s society. They begin their research by asking a series of questions but before we can move on to the questions they asked, other questions need to be answered first. These question are: a) Why do people choose to date online?
He thinks the students should be taught interpersonal intelligence and learn when, where, and what kind of internet usage is appropriate. Also in his essay it’s pointed out that many students are addicted to Facebook which tally’s 250 million hits everyday and ranks 9th in overall traffic over the internet. That kind of social networking affects all forms of academe. Additionally, online communities have a lot of factious information. It’s easy for a person to create a factitious profile and use these anonymous profiles.
You have to go and turn off the locator function for it not to show where you are posting from. The locator setting shows where you are posting right down to the house number. Some people end up having a dependency or addiction to social media and sacrifice their home life, school, and relationships with other people. Another disadvantage of social media is work production. Social media can distract an employee and take away from work that needs to be completed.
3.2 Describe the risks and possible consequences for children or young people using the internet, mobile phones and other technologies. The internet can be a valuable tool for both educational and social reasons, but there are some serious risks associated with using the internet, mobile phones and other similar technologies. Children and young people are vulnerable and may expose themselves to dangers when using the internet, mobile phones and other technologies. The majority of people when asked would mention the same big three concerns about their Child and the risks and consequences of them using the internet, mobile phones and other technologies. They are Stranger Danger, Pornography and Bullying.
A good solution might be to block the access to websites such as Facebook, so that technology can continue to be a tool for knowledge and intellectual advancement, rather than socialization. Many friends of mine use Facebook on a daily basis for several reasons: to chat with other friends, to see what other people’s lives look like, or to keep in contact with people that live far away. All five of the friends I asked said Facebook is a very useful website, but it is also addicting and a waste of time most of the time. Works Cited Bugeja, Michael. “Facing the Facebook.” The Arlington Reader: Contexts and Connections.
She also states that social media encourages bullies to say things that they wouldn't normally say. The author uses strong evidence to support that social media is out of control. This is evident when she states, “Well umpm,
Life has distinctly undergone some very dramatic changes ever since the dawn of the Internet era and with each passing day there is a growing dependence on it. People start to rely on the accessibility of information on social media, we rely on the internet to give us answers and retain information. Social networking including Facebook, twitter, blogs and even You Tube play a role in our education. Students who attempt to multi-task, checking their social media sites while there are studying or working on a paper lose their ability to perform the task on hand and their concentration by these distractions, I know this to be true because I can admit that I too have looked at Facebook and the internet for distractions while writing this paper. Another problem that social media creates another way for people to bully or have access to emotionally abuse others.
