Social influence of Charles Manson on his ‘family’ Charles Manson was born on the 12th of November 1934, in Ohio to his sixteen year old mother. Manson had a turbulent childhood which involved being repeatedly abandoned by his mother for different relationships. Manson spend the majority of his teen and early adulthood life in and out of prisons for various different offences, these mostly for armed robbery, selling women for prostitution and auto theft crimes. In prison he was taught how to play the guitar, which he believed would launch his career in Los Angeles. This is where he met Mary Brunner, she was a lover of Manson’s and wanted to extend their ‘family’, this encouraged the second women Lynette Fromme to join their ‘group’. Manson tried to peruse his career in the entertainment industry, but soon was rejected. His ‘family’ was growing and Manson was acting as their guru, practicing bible teaching. His delusions went further when he believed that there was an impending race war, which was predicted in The Beetles album ‘white album.’ The iconic song ‘helter skelter’ made Manson believe that he was being called and that he was the chosen one to initiate the race war, and when the ‘blacks’ succeeded they would be called upon for their power. The murders of Gary Hinmen, The Tate family and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca then followed. The murders were carried out at the hands of ‘the family’ with the orders from Manson. Eventually they were all caught and prosecuted for all of the murders. Manson was described as a charismatic individual, with all the members of the family saying how it was full of love and caring for one another. But Manson was able to ‘brainwash’ these middle class men and women to carry out such horrific acts of murder, the ‘family looked up to Manson, seeing him as a ‘guru’ of god.
