Aging, as an area of study that is unique and there is no unified theory of life span development and aging. Each of us has a personal theory of aging and later life development. I was lucky enough to have spent cherished time with maternal and paternal grandparents and of course my parents. My “theory” on aging is more personal, influenced by culture, my age, my education and my experience in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood and many other factors. What you believe about aging influences how you perceive and interact with older clients. Whether you are a counselor or a client, ones theory of aging influences your perspective and how one lives there day to day life.” The problem of how aging evolved was first debated by August Weismann who developed the theory of programmed death which proposed that aging evolved to the advantage of the species, not the individual, and that there must be an evolutionary advantage to having only a limited lifespan.” Ljubuncic, & Reznick, (2009). Aging of our population present enormous societal challenges to ensuring that our infrastructure can support the needs of our elderly people enabling them to live healthy, independent, and productive lives. For us to meet the challenges of our aging society we must rethink our conceptualizations of aging and redefine what it means to be older. The goal of the research is to improve our understanding of an aging society and provide education, information, and interventions. The research will be for both the good of the population and enhancing my knowledge, as we are all aging, they are both equally important. Ljubuncic, P., & Reznick, A. Z. (2009).
