Situational Leadership Analysis of Remember the Titans

The Disney film Remember the Titans presents an opportunity to look at the evolution of leadership over the course of a season based on the development of a team. This analysis will identify the different stages of group development using Tuckman’s Model (forming, storming, norming, and performing) throughout the course of the Titan’s season (Employers, 2010). Within each phase, the Hersey- Blanchard Situational Leadership Model (SLM) will be used to assess both the developmental level of the team and the corresponding leadership style exhibited by the two main coaches in the film, Herman Boone and Bill Yoast (Hersey & Blanchard, 1988). This analysis will provide insight into how the creation of a high performing team requires different types of leadership at various points of growth. The forming stage begins with the selection of Coach Boone as the new head coach of the football team (5:50). Coach Yoast then meets with the parents and players of the team after learning he will no longer return to lead the program (9:19) and many players insist on leaving the team if Yoast leaves. An important event in this stage is the team meeting held by Boone (13:18) to start the football season. Yoast and his players enter the meeting late and with a confrontational presence, interrupting Boone’s first interaction with players as head coach. Yoast and Boone have a heated discussion over their coaching roles and responsibilities after the meeting, establishing the leadership dynamic and ending the forming stage (13:40). The team falls into the R1 category of readiness during this forming stage. Not only has the team shown signs of their unwillingness to play (9:19) but Yoast has also been unwilling, creating a conflict with Boone during the team meeting (13:18).
