In Macbeth the word blood has several meanings to it. It is used as a symbol of honor, guilt, murder, life, and family; or it can simply be actual blood itself. Many people in this play have died by murder, except one; Lady Macbeth. In the end of the play she ended up taking her own life out of fear and guilt. Lady Macbeth is a coward. “Wouldst thou have that Which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem,…” says Lady Macbeth to her husband. After Macbeth has “done the deed” he washes his hands and says “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? That’s how it signifies Macbeth in the play. Macbeth is portrayed as a traitor and a murderer. He killed King Duncan, and is responsible for Banquo’s, and Macduff’s family’s death. In Act 5 Scene VII Macduff says “My voice is in my sword, thou bloodier villain…”. This means that Macduff will go after Macbeth for revenge after Macbeth killed his family. His sword represents his anger, and “bloodier villain” represents a dead man walking, Macbeth. He is the bloody villain that Macduff refers to in the quote. Blood represents life when Macduff was born. He was ripped out of his mothers womb. When Macbeth heard that he couldn’t be killed by any man born from a woman. That was correct because Macduff was ripped out of his mother’s womb. That is a sign of life and happiness. Overall, the word blood has a lot of significance behind it because it means a lot of things. It represents things that are the complete opposite of each other like hate or happiness, or life and death.
