Should Homosexuals Be Allowed To Marry PHI103 May 13, 2013 When people think of America, they think of the American Dream. America is supposed to be the land of the free. We have such a history of fighting for equal rights for everyone in this country so that everyone could enjoy this so called “American Dream”. With this dream in mind, most of society will say they support equal rights for homosexuals. Ask these members of society if they support gay marriage, however, and the support of gay equality comes to a halt. As seen in the most recently debated public votes, the majority of Americans voted for the Constitutional Amendment, which puts a ban on gay marriage. All of these Americans, ironically, do believe in providing equal rights to the gay community, rights including: no toleration of discrimination in jobs by creating equal opportunity employers, rights protecting gays from hate crimes, rights allowing same access to housing, rights allowing advancement in government, and so on. However, the concept of gay marriage is still not considered a right the American people should extend to homosexuals. Heterosexuals and Homosexuals should have the same rights to marry the person that they love. These rights and responsibilities apply to only male-female couples from the 1996 Defense of Marriage Acts. Larger benefits when married can include Medicaid, property tax, income tax as well as joint family rights. Gays and Lesbians should have the same rights as Heterosexual to marry, however the Supreme Court still has not granted the same right? In denying same-sex partners the right to marry the government of the United States is discriminating against them in their ability to access the social, legal, and economic benefits available exclusively to lawfully married couples.
