Short Essay on Women in the Church Many have argued the “rights” of women to be in church headship. However, this issue is not about “rights” or even about equality, for Scripture clearly states that men and women alike stand on the same level ground before God. At the core of the issue is the question of God’s created order for the roles of man and woman. An elder is one who exercises “humble, pastoral oversight,” over a body of believers. They may also be called on to teach in the absence of the pastor. To become an elder, one must be blameless, sexually pure, vigilant, sober-minded, hospitable, gifted in teaching, and gentle. The elder must not be quarrelsome, covetous, a drinker, violent, greedy, or a new convert. Additionally, he must have authority over his home, especially his children, who should be in reverent submission to him. Finally, the elder must have a good testimony among non-Christians. The root word of deacon means “to serve” and encapsulates the job description of deacons; they provide service in one’s home, at meals, and in one’s personal life. Deacons exist to meet the practical needs of those within the local church body. To become a deacon, one must be reverent and straightforward, holding a clean conscience. A deacon must remain sexually pure and have proper authority over his family. He must not be greedy or a drinker. A deaconess must also be reverent, patient, and reliable, and must not be a slanderer. As implied, Scripture indicates that women may hold the role of deaconess. The context and structure of 1 Timothy 3:11 leads to a more proper interpretation of the word “wives,” as “women.” Thus, the verse spells out qualifications for a deaconess, such as Phoebe mentioned in Romans 16:1.
