SHC31 Promote Communication SHC31 1.1 Identify the different reasons why people communicate Establishing a relationship Use eye contact, wave, be friendly, shake hands, smile, and introduce yourself Maintaining a relationship Acknowledge people you have met: Smile, make eye contact, wave Small Talk With Parents, asking how their weekend was or asking how they are as well as their child Giving and receiving information Communicate clearly using daily sheets and pre-school whiteboard. Listen when parents are giving you information about their child Giving and Receiving acknowledgment, reassurance, encouragement and support Take interest in the children in your care. Support them in their concerns and activities: verbal praise, gentle touch when attending to physical care, encouraging smiles and nods, eye contact and behaving appropriately Expressing need and feelings Give children and young people opportunities to express their needs and feelings: creative activities to encourage expression. SHC31 1.2 Explain fully how communication affects relationships in the setting Communication affects all relationships in the setting, communication is the key to establishing a good relationship as shown in the poster above. Having positive relationships with adults, ones that you are working with and parent’s leads to a comfortable atmosphere within the setting.
