The topic of sexual harassment is extremely important in schools today. Sexual harassment is any unwelcome and unwanted behavior that is sexual in nature. In schools and businesses, this unwanted and unwelcome behavior interferes with the opportunity of the victim to do his or her job effectively. One of the most important responsibilities of educators is to provide a safe environment in which all students can learn. Sexual harassment is a serious problem in schools today that carries several consequences for the victims and harassers. From a personal and business perspective, sexual harassment carries extreme economic consequences for the victim, the accused harasser, and other bystanders who are witnesses of the unwanted acts. The companies themselves are also at risk of extreme economic loss. One common form of sexual harassment in the work place is quid pro quo, which is when benefits are given to an employee from a person of power in exchange for sexual demands. If the victim refuses, he or she risks losing his or her job or the chance of a promotion. If the victim is lucky enough not to lose their job, the unwelcome sexual conduct of someone in authority makes the working conditions hostile and unpleasant, sometimes leading the employee to quit. According to our text, “victims of sexual harassment lose $4.4 million dollars in wages and 973,000 hours in unpaid leave each year in the United States.” The key elements of sexual harassment are power, prejudice, and vulnerability. Sexual harassment is not about sex. According to the online text book the core of the problem is about the abuse of power or authority, even though the perpetrator might try to convince everyone that his or her actions were based on sexual or romantic interests.
