Sadja Gooden 3B Selfish pride is excessive confidence or glorification in one’s self. Love can be defined as an intense feeling of deep affection. Well the story, ‘The Scarlet Ibis’ speaks off these two themes and how a rare and beautiful human being who is destroyed by the thunderstorm of the human pride. Selfish pride generally causes more harm than good through the following symbols the coffin, red and rainstorm. First, I will elaborate on the first symbol which is the coffin. This coffin was made for Doddle when they first thought he would not survive. So one day, his brother brought him to show him the coffin and insisted that he touched it. Doddle refused but his brother threatened him that he would leave him if he didn’t. Doddle was a special child that had many disabilities. It was said that if he got too excited, too hot or cold, he would probably die. One day lying on his stomach, Doddle strained himself trying to move. “Trembling, he’d push himself up, turning first red, then a soft purple.” It was also said that straining may also cause his death. Doddle was obviously attempting to do something that may have killed him but he’d tried anyways. His brother being ashamed of him being invalid brother, wanted to train him run, swim, climb trees and fight. But because of his brother having to go to school and Doddle being sick, they were a bit behind they’re scheduled. They decided to double the efforts. “Wherever we went, I would purposely walk fast until Doddle face turned red and his eyes became glazed.” Doddle was trying to beat his disabilities but it was something he couldn’t have beaten.
