Self Obsessed Nation

But first let me take a selfie! Each day as the world gets more technologically advanced, trends also start to change. The latest trend that has struck the world is the excessive use of taking selfies. The term selfie may not be in the dictionary today. However, in 2013 the Oxford Dictionaries Online officially labeled the term “selfie” as the word of the year. Many consider “selfies” to be a good thing, in fact, in a New York Times article, Jenna Wortham writes that the selfie is merely a “mode of self-expression, and a means of communicating and connecting with others (2013)”. The theories many people have about selfies and its benefits to humans without doubt one sided; for they only polish the good aspects yet hides the bad. In reality, ever since technology has become portable, we as humans have excessively used it to an extent that we have become less involved in the world around us. All the modern day new generation cares about is about themselves. Selfies, for example, has become a new trend that is all about themselves. In the December of 2013 when the song “SELFIE” by the Chainsmokers was released, it was excessively criticized by the elders of the living world as the most profound thing they had ever seen. The reason behind their logic was that people in the past used to take pictures to keep a memory. However, selfies are now a trend that focuses on a particular person and how gorgeous he/she is to the “connected world” on twitter Facebook and Instagram. The connection the social media presents to the world is not so connected, after witnessing the people of the world go into a shell of “it’s all about me”. This mindset of many people have caused not only the world to become more and more closed in way of communication. For example for an average social media user, 300 friends on Facebook, twitter, or even Instagram may seem to be quite decent.
