A Journal Review of “Self Forgiveness: The Stepchild of Forgiveness Research Gordon B. Johnson Liberty University Counseling 506-DO2 Dr. Breazeale 23 Mar 2012 Summary In this article, the researchers seek to perform a conceptual analysis of self-forgiveness, including defining and distinguishing it from interpersonal forgiveness and pseudo self-forgiveness, in hopes of stimulating effective research on the subject matter (Hall & Fincham, 2005). According to (Hall & Fincham, 2005), while there has been much research devoted to the concept of forgiveness between perpetrator and victim (interpersonal forgiveness), there exists surprisingly few studies analyzing the subject of intrapersonal or self-forgiveness. The authors begin by defining self-forgiveness as “a willingness to abandon self-resentment in the face of one’s own acknowledged objective wrong, while fostering compassion, generosity, and love toward oneself” (Hall & Fincham, 2005, p. 622). A detailed comparison of the two forms of forgiveness is examined, including a chart emphasizing the distinctions between intrapersonal and interpersonal forgiveness. As stated by Hall and Fincham (2005), there exist two possible foci of self-forgiveness available to humans, the first is the forgiving of one’s “self” for a self-inflicted injury or, conversely, the forgiving of one’s self for an injury to another person.
Because the overall objective of Restorative justice is to involve all stakeholders, it requires the assumption that crimes or violations are committed against real individuals, rather than against the state. It serves as an advocate’s restitution to the victim by the offender rather than retribution by the state against the offender. Instead of continuing and escalating the cycle of violence, it tries to restore relationships and stop the violence. Victims’ respond to this as a need because it helps them feel what they want to feel most and that’s safe. Some of the most important components a victim needs and desires are to feel safe, to have support and most importantly to have a voice.
Wright also, narrates confrontation to articulating empathy for an individual in assisting them to make healthier choices. On the other hand, the volume misses the mark to mention the awareness of biblical rebuke and the right the right time to use this kind of confrontation. If confrontation is used too quick in the relationship it can cause damage to the counselor’s relationship with the counselee, but then again the type of confrontation necessary is also a significant concern that ought to be
The authors did determine that the substance abusing individuals did not have a proper way of coping with their anger and determined that this was problematic; hence the need for the Forgiveness Therapy. The authors did determine that the lack of anger management skills and the previous used skills were inadequate and triggered further negative emotions such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and violence. In the article the authors did move from topic to topic and not just from one citation to another; the authors did rely on sound research in the field but did not overly rely on it to make their point. The authors were able to ascertain that individuals in the past have tried to rely on the techniques they have used in the past to avoid relapse, but these have remained to fail them in the end. Individual substance abuse clients have benefitted from the forgiveness therapy, the research shows.
In the vigilantism cases, although we could all relate to the frustration involved for the actors, we all agree that one must stay within the bounds of the law to seek out justice. The next discussion involved civil disobedience and we found that we agreed that civil disobedience has been helpful historically to help change the laws and improve our society. However, the general consensus on civil disobedience was also that the acts of disobedience must be done in a peaceful manner for the acts to be effective. The final acts of crimes among professionals had another anonymous decision. Our team found that we did not agree with those professionals who chose to commit crimes.
While perpetrators of bullying may feel justified in their actions, Article 1 aims to focus more on the interpersonal conflicts that perpetrators face in relation to the situation they find themselves in. The study aims to focus on bridging the gap between individual and situational factors that may encourage an individual to act as a perpetrator, seeing how stressful work environments have long been assumed to create conditions that eventually lead to the bullying within the workforce (Hauge et al., 2009). There are not many studies from the perpetrator’s point of view, simply due to individuals underreporting their behavior, but analyzing a situational dilemma that results in deviant behavior (i.e. bullying) offers insights on what triggers a perpetrator to finally snap. Comparison of Population Each of the three articles depended on self-reported questionnaires in order to understand the phenomenon of workplace
Third was the need for me to know not only that there was a dissatisfaction with my work performance, but, also that there would be consequences that affected my job. What transpired in this example is one of the barriers of communication – Silence. The employment agency assumed that no news was good news. We see that this was not the case. In reality, ‘silence and information withheld are both common and problematic.’ (Robbins & Judge, pg
