Seeds Sprouting October 24, 2011 , 8-2 Question Does a seed need water to sprout? Hypothesis A seed that receives water will grow better and faster than a seed that receives no water. Materials -2 plastic cups -2 seeds -20 ml of water (every other day) -75 ml of soil (in each cup) -measuring cup Procedure 1. Pour 75 ml of soil into each cup 2. Label one cup A and one cup B (A will have water and B will not) 3. Put 1 seed in each cup halfway down the soil 4. Pour 20 ml of water into cup A every other day 5. Repeat step 4 for 2 weeks 6. Observe 7. Record Results Observations Conclusion A seed does not need water to grow. Although a seed getting water speeds up the process, it doesn’t have to get water to grow. Without water, the plant isn’t as green as it should be, but it is still growing. The experiment did not go as planned though. There was an error that occurred. Even though seed B grew without any water, seed A did not. Pouring 20 ml of water in every other day is too much water for a plant to handle. The seed then drowned and could not grow so no results could be taken for seed A. Day 1 3 5 7 Seed A Nothing has happened. There has been no change. There has been no change.
