Reflective Reading "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" The Secret Life of Walter Mitty In reading "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" by James Thurber, I was immediately drawn in by the title. What secret life was Walter leading? In the first line "We're going through!" The commander's voice was like think ice breaking” (Clugston, 2010, p. 2). My imagination could only think we were going on an adventure. We will look at the formalist approach on this adventure with "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". Showing the literary tools and techniques that James Thurber chose and how they were used to make the intent of the writer known. While Walter Mitty has dreams that include violent tendencies, Walter is a mentally abused husband that is controlled by his wife, he dreams about being a hero and being in control of his life. The plot of the story in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" started in the first line. "We're going through!" The Commander's voice was like thin ice breaking." (Clugston, 2010, p. 2). Then in the last line "The Old Man'll get us through", they said to one another." (Clugston, 2010, p. 2). This clearly shows how Walter is the hero and others have confidence in his ability to do something right. However, then Walter's wife, Mrs. Mitty, interrupted the daydream by yelling at Walter. "You're driving too fast!" (Clugston, 2010, p. 2). This is the start of showing how Mrs. Mitty tells her husband what to do. Mrs. Mitty, then feels that he needs to see a doctor, She felt that he was stressed out and that was the reason why he was acting the way he did. Walter Mitty was driving his wife to Watebury, CT., to get her hair done. After dropping off his wife at the hairdresser, she reminded him about getting shoes and to put on his gloves. Again, Mrs. Mitty is telling Walter what to do by reminding him of
