New Changes to School Lunch Menus Ciera Jimerson Strayer University Dr. Jeff Kersh ENG115 August 19, 2012 One of the biggest epidemics in this country is children being overweight. As adults we are here to guide and educate children on the benefits, and how important it is to keep our bodies healthy. We have created a new menu for school lunches to ensure children are getting more fruits and vegetables. Changing the menus to school lunches will allow children to lead healthier lives and can also increase life expansion. Lack of nutrition can cause obesity, poor academic performance, and an increase in diseases. Nanci Hellmich of USA TODAY (2011) explains that Tom Vilsack, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture says,” about a third of children and adolescents — 25 million kids – are obese or overweight. Extra pounds put children at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,…show more content…
As long as schools, and officials follow the guidelines required by the NSLP (National School Lunch Program) which was updated August 2012, they will continue to be funded. We tell children that the most important meal of the day is breakfast; well in actuality everything you eat is important to your body. Eating healthier foods gives us strength, and energy. A lack of energy can cause children to become lazy and slack off in school which leads to poor grades. Also an unhealthy body has a greater chance of getting sick versus a healthy body which can affect attendance in school. A nutritious meal keeps the brain happy and healthy for learning new
