Geraldine Brooks explores how ignorance, superstition and hysteria can be as fatal as any plague within her novel ‘Year of Wonders’. During the trying year of the plague superstition, ignorance, and hysteria took over the village, causing people to make irrational accusations, decisions and behave immorally, turning against each other. Brooks explores how the plague acts as a catalyst effecting each of the villagers differently on a physical and emotional level. The plague is defined as a large amount of insects or animals infesting a place causing damage, within the novel we see the villagers become these animals. Fear and anguish brought out some of the worst qualities in the villagers causing them to turn against one another creating anger, conflict and damage unto one another.
Families are full of love and hope but to annihilate that all is a complete act of putrid evil and hate. War gives illusional rights to these inhumane beings that these acts are a part of life which they aren’t. Natural death should be the cause of all these lives, not innocent murder. War is the reason these families blood has been spilt. After all these past events, the 1800’s wars, The Boer War, WWI, WWII and The Cold War, you’d think we’d all have learnt our lesson that war was destroying people, along with the world.
They killed us with land mines and booby traps; they disappeared in the night, or into the tunnels, or into the elephant grass and bamboo” (199n21). At the time the Vietnam war seemed unforgiving and mysterious, in ways that it made most soldiers naturally evil who in which portrayed enormous grief upon the enemy. It was a time where in every soldier's head they carried a motto, “kill or be killed.” In the novel, In The Lake Of The Woods, small and simple footnotes are attached at the end of important chapters and they give the reader clues concerning the story or they expresses symbolic twists that make the novel somewhat unpredictable. The Footnote I have chosen runs on the back of chapter 20. The small passage explains related truth on the Vietnam War, symbolizes what John Wade, the protagonists, has witnessed, and finally how it portrays the rest of the novel.
Do we worry too much about the welfare of animals? Although I personally believe that we do not worry enough about the welfare of animals, I must debate and explore both sides of the argument in order to make a fair judgement. We are constantly surrounded by endless animal cruelty statistics, animal charity and sanctuary commercials and shocking images of how global warming is taking its toll upon the welfare of wild animals in the affected regions. However, we are equally kept informed about the struggles people, our species, endure on a daily basis in the third world countries, whether affected by natural disasters or famine. Some may use this to claim that we worry too much about the welfare of animals, when in reality we should be focusing on the more important matters such as charities which help to support those suffering from injustice, war, and are in need of food and simple supplies in order to survive.
If ongoing pollution cannot be reduced, then the climate is just going to keep getting worse day by day. As a result, not only will a single nation be suffering, but also the entire planet will change due to global warming. Of course, if people can make efficient adaptation plans to control the ongoing global warming and climate change, in the future it can prevent the threat of global warming and many other climate change issues. The book by the Modoc tribe “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” shows that their cultural beliefs matter a lot to them. “The Earth on Turtle’s Back” talks about how much respect the Onondaga tribe has for the natural world. They believe that each creature has its own power. The book shows kindness and respect for one another. Even though the Sky Chief did not show any respect for the nature, when he asked the men to uproot the tree, he still respected the nature and his wife by uprooting the tree just to make her dream come true.
The three things that affected North Vietnamese, hating Americans, living in harsh conditions and receiving severe injuries were all things they had to deal with during and after the war. They hated the Americans for causing deaths and poisoning land that will now cause problems for North Vietnamese today. The harsh conditions led to injuries which also made them hate Americans. As much as they hated them at that time, they now forgive and try to move forward from what happened. The Vietnam War definitely affected them in a bad way but at least they look into the future and not think of the past.
But even with all the power she holds she still questions her motives and that is very ironic. The biggest moment is the story were we see her question her power is when she saw the downed boar up close and in flesh “This wild thing, this perfect creature” she thinks “She feels sorrow in the back of her throat, the sorrow of existence”(304). Through this moment of clarity we see this woman that was chasing down some of those pigs with Frazier, the one killing off all these rats, feral pigs change and start having more compassion for these animals. She really doesn’t want to be killing these animals
Without set standards in a workplace especially one with safety hazards in a work environment many people and their families could be affected. OSHA standards are put in place to help protect and maintain a healthy work environment. OSHA standards will help me progress as a professional, because it has so many different things to read about on ways to prevent hazards and to maintain a healthy work environment for any place I work. I can learn about properly disposing of hazardous material used or just something as simple as following the emergency fire exits. Many things you would think would be common sense, but I believe you can never have too much information on how to prevent an accident in a workplace or stay safe.
However, there are may that are not able to do that. These that are not able to evolve and adapt to the changes in life are going to disappear and our families will not be able to enjoy them. There are many that say that is not an issue. There are things that the human race has to do to make it possible for survival. The Endangered Species Act should be strengthened due to the fact that they have been able to help so many species survive.
