Salvador Dali Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali was born at 8:45 on the morning of May 11, 1904 in the small town of Figueres, Spain. Salvador Dali is an artist who lived from 1904 to 1989. Dali was Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and designer. When Salvador Dali was born he was said to be very flamboyant, more commonly known as liking boys. In February 1921, Dali's mother died of breast cancer. Dali was 16 years old; he later said his mother's death "was the greatest blow I had experienced in my life. I worshipped her... I could not resign myself to the loss of a being on whom I counted to make invisible the unavoidable blemishes of my soul." After her death, Dali's father married his dead wife's sister, Dali’s aunt. Salvador was not mad that his father got remarried, because he had a great love and respect for his aunt. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he mastered academic techniques. After passing through phases of Cubism, Futurism and Metaphysical painting, he joined the Surrealists in 1929 and his talent for self-publicity rapidly made him the most famous representative of the movement. Salvador Dali was influenced by many renaissance era artists. He painted surrealism which was a 20th century style of art and literature created in France that was made to stress the subconscious or non-rational significance of imagery arrived at by automatism or the exploitation of chance effects. His works of art were usually about dreams. His most famous piece of artwork “Persistence of Memory” reflects his theme of dream type artwork. In August 1929 Salvador Dali met his future wife Gala, Elena Ivanovna Diakonova, who was a Russian immigrant and 10 years older then Dali. Gala died on June 10, 1982.
