She was said to be three quarters white however, her mother was a slave therefore she followed the line of her mother’s status and was a slave as well. Sally became the proper of Jefferson due to a law that stated that anything a wife owned transferred to the husband. She served as house slave and maid to Jefferson and his daughters until given her time by Jefferson’s daughter Martha. There are many interesting facts as well as much speculation…show more content…
Although most historians now agree that Jefferson and Heming’s did in fact have a sexual relationship, debate still continues over the duration of that relationship, as well as the nature of said relationship. Admirers of Jefferson are inclined to see his relationship with Heming’s as a romantic love affair, despite his public statements about race. Those in doubt of Jefferson’s sterling nature of character, cast things in a more negative light, seeing him as one more predatory white slave owner and his relationship with Heming’s as proof of the hypocrisy behind his eloquent statements about freedom and equality.
