Saint Ignatius and the Company of Jesus, by August Derleth explains the life of Saint Ignatius Loyola. Saint Ignatius was a Spanish knight. During one of his battles, he lost his legs and had to have surgery on them. While he was recovering, he found books about saints of God and decided to read them out of boredom. He became obsessed, and decided to completly give himself to God. The story of his life as a follower and teacher can suprise people of how devoted he was to serving God. Saint Ignatius was at first a knight and general in the Spainish army, but later became a strong follower of Jesus. One morning, a messenger knocked on his door and told him that the captain wanted to speak to all generals of Spanish army. Aparently the French were approaching Pamplona, a Spanish city, which was an obvious threat. During the battle to defend the city of Pamplona, Ignatius lost his legs to a cannon ball. The French had a policy that they would return any captured citizens of enemy countries, so they decided they would try to heal Ignatius after they took the city. When Ignatius was returned home, he had to have a few more surgeries, which lengthened his recovery time. During this time, he had gotten extremly bored, and wanted to read books about tales of brave and galant knights. When all the books that were avalible were books about saints of God, he called them woman's literature and refused to read them. However, eventually he read the books, and decided that he should become a saint too. He took a vow of poverty, and after his recovery, imideatly headed to the Vatican so he could start worshiping God. Ignatius was strong in defending his faith and his method of worshiping God. Ignatius made a vow of poverty and lived very uncomfortably. Most people did appreciate what Ignatius was
