CHM130 Lab 1 SAFETY, EQUIPMENT, AND THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD Name: Tammy Pechac A student enters their laboratory setting and is getting ready to set up. What preparations should be made? (16 points) As a lab student I should be aware of my goal and reason for being in the lab, use my common sense, follow safety measures carefully and ask questions about things I am not sure of to avoid injury or compromising the lab exercise. I should be sure I have all necessary items to perform my experiment before beginning the lab to avoid leaving anything unattended. I should locate fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, phones, showers, and fire alarms and all other safety devices in the lab in case of trouble. Some safety rules to follow in my lab would be no eating, drinking, and smoking while I am performing my lab. Read directions and labels carefully. If I do not understand a piece of my equipment or chemicals I need to ask questions before proceeding with the lab. I should wear Personal Protective equipment, (PPE) gloves, masks, lab coats and safety goggles. I should not have any loose clothing or hair. I will keep my area clean and free of unused chemicals and equipment. I will properly dispose of all supplies and containers. Use proper ventilation while performing my labs. I will not put anything in my mouth and I will wash my hands before and after performing the lab experiments. A student spills chemicals on his or her skin. Explain the procedure that should be followed. (16 points) The affected area should be immediately flushed with large volumes of running water for several minutes. I should remove affected clothing to rinse the skin thoroughly. If a chemical is splashed into the eyes, use an eyewash fountain or place eye under running water to rinse the eyes and with clean fingers
