I chose the book Sacajawea by Harold P. Howard for my topic, the Louis and Clark Expedition. This book tells of the incredible journey of Louis and Clark as they made their way across the continent to explore and document the land and what it contained, and how Sacajawea at age sixteen, with her baby strapped to her back helped guide the explorers through the uncharted terrain of the western United States. This book also contains the controversial accounts of Sacajawea’s life after the expedition explaining what might have became of the beneficial Indian girl. I thought the content was very interesting and it explained the explorers’ journey well. Howard described several key points to the expedition from the beginning in 1803 to the end in 1806. He told of how the party began the expedition to the Pacific ocean and their trip back when they split up to explore separate areas. Harold P. Howard also told of two different stories of Sacajawea’s life after the exploration was finished. One possibility being that after her husband’s death she wondered from tribe to tribe acquiring husbands from each and having several children. The other being that she returned to her tribe and lived to an old age eventually being buried in a Shoshoni commentary. His sources came from several journals that belonged to members of the party and also from other researchers that had gathered information over the years from different records and accounts of people that had came in contact with members of the exploring party. His book was very effective in getting the point across of the hardships and troubles of the journey that had never before been made by Americans. At times his writing style was difficult to continue reading, but this is mostly because the topic was uneventful. This book should be read by anyone interested in the true account of the expedition and the two possibilities of the later part of Sacajawea’s life whether it be for school purposes or simply out of
