Introduction Background - The history of communication, what is communication, which definition(s) I am I going to accept in this essay and why are they important to nursing. - What are the fundamental principles of communication in nursing. - What am I accepting as the nurse’s role in communicating with patients. - Team work: The dynamics partnership between service provider and patient and contribution of inter professional and interagency team working in achieving affective seamless care. - Barriers to effective team working In this essay I will be using the Gribbs reflective cycle (Reid, 1994: see appendix 1) to structure my reflection on a clinical incident that occurred during placement.
The following essay will discuss a clinical incident which may have had the potential to cause harm to a patient whilst being nursed post operatively. The focus will be to critically discuss drug errors, why they occur and consider the rationale behind intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, outlining the possible negative effects of fluid overload on a patient whilst considering the nurses role in respect of legal and professional issues surrounding the incident. To protect identities and comply with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct (2008) all names will be changed. The model chosen for this reflection is the Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle which encompasses 6 stages of description, thoughts and feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan which will continuously improve my nursing skills by learning experiences and develop my self confidence when caring for others (Siviter 2008). Description The critical incident took place on a surgical ward whilst I was on placement.
The following essay aims to identify how reflection in action and on action may impact on the provision of services by District Nurses. The author felt it important to define the two concepts, in order to understand their relevance to practice. It was found by Schon (1983) that reflection- in-action, was a nurses’ ability to understand how an individual was responding to a nursing intervention at the present time; in contrast to reflection-on-action which was thinking through a situation after it had occurred. From this understanding the author established through in depth reading that reflection has been a topic of discussion within nursing, health and social care professions for years (Kinsella, 2009). The theory of reflection has made the author identify the epistemology of reflection in and on action and the effect this can have on her professional growth.
Introduction 1.0 Introduction In this assignment the authors will apply management theory to a real world situation. A definition of an effective leader will be offered. The authors will then identify two Clinical Nurse Managers (CNM) they have worked with in clinical settings, addressing individually the qualities and behaviours of each person. For the purposes of this assignment the authors have selected CNMs who have similar roles within their respective nursing units. In order to preserve confidentiality pseudonyms will be used and each nursing unit referred to as A and B.
Next to conclude this assignment one will go on to assess the contribution of motivational interviewing to nursing practice. Motivational is defined as “a skillful clinical style for eliciting form patients their own good motivations for making behavior changes in interest of their own health”. (Rollnick et al 2008). Motivational interviewing was developed by professionals working in the area of addiction. Theses specialists were focusing on patients particularly with alcohol addiction.
The Health Belief Model (HBM) is a psychological model that is use in nursing to explain and predict health behaviors of patients diagnosed with chronic disease like MI. In educating the patient using this model, the nurse will focus on the attitudes and beliefs of the patient. The nurse will encourage the patient by educating to recognize and promptly response to signs and symptoms of any complication from the MI. In-depth education opportunities will be planned and evaluated. The overall goal is for the client to return to pre-hospital living condition in an improved state of wellness.
The focus of this essay is to discuss a concept in nursing and relate it to a clinical experience and observation with reference to relevant literature. An individual’s view on a subject is known as a concept (Pearson et al 1996). It is suggested by Pearson et al (1996) that nursing is full of concepts which are subjects that individuals feel imperative to nursing, which they need to know about and to develop theories accordingly. I consider concepts to be significant components to nursing as they provide us with the ability to organize our thoughts and allow us to understand the theories behind nursing. I have chosen to use the concept of caring for this essay.
This essay is a reflective account of one situation that occurred whilst on a community placement. This assignment will aim to identify the evidence base from which the actions of the nurse were decided in regards to the treatment that was provided. In order to discuss my own thoughts and feelings in regard to the actions and treatment that was given, this assignment will be wrote in the first person to identify areas where I can develop my knowledge and future practice (Webb, 1992). To assist with my reflection, the use of the What? model of structured reflection will be used (Driscoll, 1994).
The development of reflective review offers the practitioners a useful way to take responsibility for his or her clinical effectiveness. Johns (1995) has stated that the methods for managing quality in care needed to be devolved to the point of delivery and that this is an essential aspect of everyday practice. Reflection is used as means of exploring approaches to clinical supervision, clinical effectiveness and clinical governance, as well as reflecting on the participant’s skills. This essay describes a reflective experience while demonstrating a skill to deliver a presentation on Postoperative Care of the patient on return to ward. I will also discuss in this paper the reflective account on the evidence base for the chosen area of practice; a critical discussion about the practice in the chosen area; a critical evaluation of the presentation, including strengths and areas that needs to be developed; and a model or framework of reflection to be used.
Following on from the definition of health WHO (1998) defines Health Promotion as, “The process of enabling people to increase control over, and improve their health”. (Ewles and Simnett 2003 pp.23) For the purpose of this essay, skills and knowledge required by nurses and their role in promoting health effectively will be discussed, and an example from clinical practice will be used to demonstrate the importance of Health Promotion. Confidentiality will be maintained as required by the Nursing Midwifery council (2008) and the patient will be referred to as Tom. Also to be discussed will be the barriers in effective health promotion. Example from practice Whilst on placement with district nurses, I attended a home visit to Tom.
