Robert Burns – A Romantics Poet English 10 Honors Ms. Vachris April 29, 2013 English 10 Honors Ms. Vachris April 29, 2013 Robert Burns – A Romantics Poet Robert Burns was a Scottish poet during the Romantic Age who used his song lyrics and poems to talk about romance, society, politics, and the aspects of life in Scotland. His poem “A Red, Red Rose” is an example of his romantic poetry. Poems such as “A Man's A Man For A' That” and “A Bard's Epitaph” display his use of society and politics in his writings. His song, “Auld Lang Syne”, a famous and traditional Scottish song sung around New Years, celebrates friendships and life in Scotland. Burns wrote all of his works in a Scottish dialect. He has written over 300 songs and poems and is well known for using his works to celebrate the many great things about life with themes such as love, humor and friendship. At the age of fifteen, young Robert Burns fell in love. This love gave him the inspiration to write his romantic poems such as “A Red, Red Rose” and it led to his many successes (poets.org, Robert Burns). He often compares his love to elements of nature and uses many similes in this poem. Example of this would be when he says that his love will last until the sea's run dry, or that his love is like a flower that is blooming in spring (Burns, “Red”). He also uses rhyming as well as repetition in this poem to emphasize his love. The language used in this poem gives off a loving and soothing tone. His style of writing really shows sentiment and love. He ends this poem by saying he would do anything for love, even if he'd have to walk ten thousand miles (Burns, “Red”). Burns' works, such as “A Red, Red Rose”, are famous in Scotland because of his use of humor and sympathy (poets.org, Robert Burns).
