Rite of Passage Into Adulthood

Time Determines the Rite of Passage Each year over 5,000 teens die due to fatal injuries caused by car accidents, and about 400,000 drivers will be seriously injured. This is partially due to the fact that many teens are not mature enough to handle the responsibility of a vehicle, and are too busy worrying about their image and how others may perceive them. In other words, are trying too hard to be looked at as an adult when in reality have not taken the proper steps to obtain that title. Many teenagers do not have a true understanding of what reality or the real world is really like, making something like acquiring a driver’s license an invalid rite of passage into adulthood. Too many teens in this day and age are trying to look, act, and in general, seem older. They are not required every day to make adult decisions, therefore do not understand the true meaning behind being considered an adult. Many teens are not faced with expenses like a mortgage or electric bill; as a matter of fact many do not even have a car payment or insurance to worry about. Therefore, how can a license be the rite of passage when enjoying the luxuries is all it comes with? For example, that must mean that a teen with their drivers license is more mature and more of an adult than that of a grandparent without theirs. Rather, the rite of passage be a license, it should be marriage or the point in life where you are able to stand on your own and not rely on your parents. Although, throughout your life you will always take advantage of your parent’s guidance, there comes a point when you are mature enough to handle all expenses such as bills on your own. In my eyes this would include being able to own your own place and grow to become independent. By being independent in this way it holds more truth than the feeling you may get of independence when getting a license. Experience plays a
