Schaeffer’s family relocated to Paris where he began working at the Radioffusion-Television Francaise. With much persuasion Schaeffer convinced the corporation to initiate the science of musical acoustics with himself as the instructor. Spending months experimenting with all available equipment led to the discovery of the term known as Musique Concrete, this occurs when the needle on a record remains in one groove which in result creates a loop. All experimental work done in Schaeffer’s early professional life is what defines him as a pioneer of electronic music.
In the article, “A Trail of DNA and Data”, Paul Saffo brings to light some interesting information about biometrics and using DNA as a source of identification. Saffo suggests that use of DNA is difficult to safeguard, that privacy will become nonexistent, and that snoops will find ways to harass us more easily and with more specific targeting. Mr. Saffo makes a good argument that DNA is difficult to safeguard. He argues that, “if DNA becomes your identity, you are sharing your secret with the world every time you sneeze or touch something”, (13), and he makes a valid point. Most utilities that perform this operation can also perform a DNS lookup on all the IP addresses as well to produce the end points names. When a malicious user has this information, they can review it to find a machine that may seem important, or they may just skip right to a direct attack on a random machine. Either way the attacker now has a basic knowledge of what they need to start forming an attack against. Take a second to think, you’re a robber that wants to rob a home in a neighborhood. You don’t want to just drive to an address in hopes that it is there.
The increase in computer use and digital communications has created a unique problem for the legal system in its effort to interpret the Fifth Amendment. Encryption technology is readily available and allows for simple and virtually irreversible scrambling of data to prevent its access by the government. This problem is saliently apparent in the cases of US v. Doe, In Re Boucher, and US v. Fricosu. During the course of investigations, the government in all three cases sought the unencrypted contents of hard drives under the control of defendants. Although the outcome was not the same for all three cases, the courts applied consistent and reasonable logic and case precedent when making their decisions.
