“But even if the church does not come to the aid of justice, I have no despair about the future.” King kind of challenged the church; with or without them, African Americans will continue to strive. “If the inexpressible cruelties of slavery could not stop us, the opposition we now face will surely fail.” This is also an example of pathos because it evoked sympathy from the readers. Another appeal to be mentioned is the ethical appeal. “I have no fear about the outcome of our struggle in Birmingham, even if our motives at present are misunderstood.” Martin Luther King is saying that he knows the outcome will be good. The question comes to mind, “What gives him credibility?” Him saying, “I have no fear…” shows his compassion for this issue.
As people we should have the freedom to think and believe whatever we want, no one else should be able to tell you that what you think and believe is wrong or right in a sense that would make it illegal to believe that. In America this law is not implied and that is the reason that people from all different countries risk their lives to come to America. They want a new start where they can be themselves and believe what they want, the opposite of what this law/idea will do when implied. This is one of the reasons America is considered one of the greatest countries to live in.
As Jefferson wrote each eloquent word, its apparent that he was proud of what his fellow Americans had accomplished. Fitting with The Declaration of Independence, I chose Thomas Jefferson as my historical figure. I believe he embodies all that pride is, from his freedom fighting, right down to his appearance. Jefferson, intelligent and elegant, never stopped fighting for the rights that he knew every man had proudly deserved. Thomas Jefferson once said, “Action will delineate and define you.” Pride in your actions, pride in your words, and pride in yourself all make for real success and Thomas Jefferson knew, and lived with that mindset.
“Unnecessary Controversy” Unnecessary Controversy “Jims’ a nigger and wouldn’t understand it” (Twain 182). That’s what Huckleberry Finn says about Jim, a runaway slave that he is helping and as if black people are any less intelligent. The word “nigger” gives the story more meaning instead of what some people think offends the reader. Throughout the book, Huckleberry struggles with himself about whether he should be helping Jim or not and that struggle claws at the reader. Mark Twain, the author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, made a good choice to include controversial words in the book to show racial injustice and should be taught in schools.
As James Weldon Johnson accounts in his chronicle, “Dairy of an Ex Colored Man” Johnson describes acts of hate and violence toward African Americans. Many thought Blacks inferior and urged they could not and will never become civilized; “you freed nigger and you gave him a ballot, but you couldn’t make a citizen out of him.”(75) Johnson lived first hand in a society Griffith wished to enforce and even proliferate. His testimony shows that what Griffith believed was the solution to a “black problem” was already in practice. But more than that, Johnson knew that this was not an issue of Black vs. White in the protection of a righteous civilization. He argued that “modern civilization hit ignorance of the masses through the means of popular education.
Still no matter how much one may argue, terrorism and child warriors are wrong and always will be. I agree with the issues that Lenn Goodman touched on in the “Some Moral Minima” article. I feel that the world should be on one accord no matter your race, gender, religion. These issues would change anyone’s view, especially if it was done to their family or friends. Sometimes it has to hit home for most to understand; but why wait until then, it should never happen because it was and will always be
The American Civil Rights movement was a very treacherous and horrific time in American history. African Americans were long censored in this country and they finally took a stand to make American citizens follow what the constitution says, “All men are created equal”. For activists, such as Malcom X and Martin Luther King, Jr., this journey to bring their people justice would certainly not be an easy one. Although they both wanted the same thing, both of these activists had very different thoughts and ways to make it happen. In order to reach this desired goal that they have been awaiting, strategies were much needed.
Our vote should not be based on race, gender, or party affiliation, but should be casted for change regarding the global crisis on the Iraq war, our economic crisis, and the world’s global warming issues, and what each candidate can do to provide solutions. Real issues that require real change. An ending note: I am so overwhelmed by emotion and brought to tears on this Election Day. To see our country move forward with racial issues, and have the ability to look past this horrible historic issue, and vote and evaluate a Black American based on true ability and talent is something that has been in my heart and has been the way I’ve conducted myself for many years, it’s truly emotional/moving to see our country move past this issue. Personally, I have bi-racial step children, and knowing that this election opens the door to them having realistic dreams of becoming president of The United States when all grown up is a tremendous step forward for this country, made possible by the election of
Julie Huynh English/History February 29, 2012 Word Count: 449 The Civil Rights Movement The African-American civil rights movement was an act trying to get rid of the racial oppression in America. This movement wanted to win equal rights for African Americans. In the 1900s, racism against African Americans was very popular among cultures. White Americans would not share the rights that they had with the African Americans; instead, they put more labor and burden upon the African Americans’ shoulders. Because of this, the African Americans had many motives for the start of the Civil Rights Movement.
It will be hard for actions that reflect irresponsibility to be accepted when there is such a powerful example of leadership of country and family daily being seen. It will be expected because it is being done. President Obama, the first lady and his family, will cause others to view African American families differently. However I believe the greatest effect will be in causing African American men and women to conduct self evaluation . Only through self examination can problems be discovered and worked on.
