Comparison Essay: Emily Dictionary and Zhaboonigan Peterson Susan Hampton English 050 “A scar does not form on the dying, a scar means, I survived.” This quote by author Chris Cleave describes of the lives of Emily Dictionary and Zhaboonigan Peterson. These woman are characters in the play, “Rez Sisters” written by Tomson Highway. He writes about the fictional Sisterhood, a group of seven Ojibwa women living on the Wasaychigan Hill Reserve, struggling to survive and improve their lives. Two of these women are Emily and Zhaboonigan; who are quite different from each other. Emily and Zhaboonigan each have tragic pasts, but cope in different ways. They have different personalities; others view them differently, and are different in the way they grow and change. Emily does not really like Zhaboonigan very much and Zhaboonigan is scared of Emily. Zhaboonigan a twenty four, young mentally challenged woman, is very different from Emily, a thirty two years old, ex-biker. Zhaboonigan and Emily, and how they deal with members of their sisterhood make their differences evident, from the very beginning of the play. The evidence of Zhaboonigan and Emily’s personalities as polar opposites is clear. Zhaboonigan is mentally challenged and can be timid at times, while Emily, an e- biker, comes on strong. When Marie-Adele explains her husband is going to look after their children while she is at the hospital, Zhaboonigan shows her personality by asking “Is he gentle?” On the other hand, when the others enter the store Emily speaks in “a loud, booming voice that paralyzes all movement in the room…” (37) Zhaboonigan hurts herself when she is angry. While having trouble doing a simple task, tying a shoelace, Zhaboonigan become so angry she bites herself. Emily responds to anger in the opposite way, turning it outward.
