The punishment is to protect the community from the offender by keeping them off the street, and trying to reconcile if this person wants to change for the better, in essence to also promote the rehabilitation option to the offender which could help denounce the conduct of the offender, but ultimately for the offender to recognize the harm done to the victim of the crime and the community. The offender needs to understand the damage that has been done by their crime, and understand their actions affect everyone around them. The punishment applies to the offender per the crime committed. If the offender committed a federal crime then they go to a federal prison, if the offender is only sentenced to a year of time they will go to a jail, and for almost every other crime they would go to a state prison. The prison whether it be state or federal its main objectives in preventing and controlling criminal behavior and acts.
The level of supervision permits the program to support the recovery process, and it allows the supervisors to react swiftly to participants who cannot comply with the program. Drug court programs are characterized in a few different ways. They create links between the courts, prosecutors, public defenders, social service agencies and community based nonprofit organizations. An assessment is also done to identify the non violent offenders. The staff members are trained in substance abuse and the recovery process for the participant.
Law enforcement is the branch of the criminal justice system which is responsible for protecting the public by preventing and solving crimes. (www.lawyers in sight.org) In conclusion, the criminal justice system is a system designed to deter crime and to protect law abiding citizens from those individuals that participate in criminal activities that could cause them to go to jail or possible
Discretion plays in important role in balancing the rights of the community with the rights of the victim and offender. Discretion is judgement which is exercised in criminal investigation by people in authority, such as police, the director of public prosecutions (DPP) and in the trial process by magistrates and judges. In Australia the role of discretion within the criminal investigation system and trial process has many advantages and disadvantages in the way authority deals with achieving justice for individuals. Police powers play a crucial role in the criminal investigation process as they have discretionary legal powers of arrest. The NSW police force is given special legal powers under the law which enable them to carry out their duties effectively, majority of these powers are contained in the law enforcement (powers and responsibilities) act 2002 in order to investigate crimes, make arrests, and gather evidence against the accused.
Restorative justice is concerned with healing victims' wounds, restoring offenders to law-abiding lives, and repairing harm done to interpersonal relationships and the community. Making the victim whole again. It seeks to involve all stakeholders and provide opportunities for those most affected by the crime to be directly involved in the process of responding to the harm caused. A central premise of restorative justice is that victims, offenders, and the affected communities are all key stakeholders in the restorative process. Victims include not only those directly affected by the offense, but also family members and members of the affected community.

Also people that are in corrections are there to maintain justice. These three components of the criminal justice system work together to create punishment for individuals that are proven guilty and help to stop them from committing other crimes, all while maintaining fairness, and keeping the rest of society safe. The basic rights of citizens are affected by criminal law by preventing citizens from doing any and everything they want to do. As citizens of the United States, we already have basic rights that we are awarded with by being born an American citizen. Basic rights are protected by criminal law.
This concludes confirms that first time offenders, depending on the seriousness of the crime, should not be imprisoned. This book is helpful by explaining the benefit of restorative justice from not just the offender but other people in the community. 2. What Justice Means to Me To me Justice means that a perpetrator of a crime that has been convicted of committing the crime he/she was charged with; receives a punishment that is equally as harsh as the crime the perpetrator committed. I also believe that in order to bring justice for the victim, the victim and/ or the victim’s family should be given counseling to enable them to work through the feelings and psychological issues that they may go through because of the crime that was committed against the victim. This counseling should be at the expense of the perpetrator. I personally am not seeking a career in the field of criminal law. I am seeking my degree in the field of psychology.
